Palmetto Chess: February 23, 2009
Greetings!

Welcome to the South Carolina Chess Associations's E-Blast!

E-Blast highlights upcoming SCCA events and chronicles past ones.  The SCCA is a non-profit membership organization that sponsors and promotes chess competition in South Carolina.  It is the US Chess Federation's official state affiliate chapter for South Carolina.
New Website Design
Check out our our redesigned website at www.scchess.org.  Since 2002 our site has been developed with Microsoft's Frontpage web editing and management software.  While Frontpage is easy to use software, it produces a lot of proprietary code that does not meet current web standards. In late 2006, Microsoft discontinued Frontpage and launched Expression Web, a professional web design tool that creates modern, standards based sites. Our site is now produced with Expression Web, which means it should look and perform better, whether viewed on a computer or a mobile device.
Upcoming Event: Scholastic Championships
The 2009 Scholastic Championships will be held in Columbia on Saturday, February 28. Over 100 students participated last year.
This year's high school section may the strongest ever.  We have three 1800 rated high school players expected to vie for the high school title: Michael Lauria (last year's undefeated champion), Daniel Dodds (1799 after a nice Land of the Sky tournament), and Kenzie Moore (1827 after a great performance at the Land of the Sky). We hope to Broadcast some of the games live at www.scchess.org.  Stay tuned, and as Dallas wide receiver Terrell Owns likes to say before a big game: "Get your popcorn ready!"

35th Snowstorm: Results
The 35th Snowstorm Special was held in beautiful Charleston, February 6-9, 2009. Andrey Chumachenko (2431) of North Carolina and 13-time South Carolina champion Klaus Pohl (2200) tied for first, each scoring 4.5 points. They battled to an epic 77-move draw in the third round. See the game here.
The creation of the SCCA was due in large part to the efforts of Mr. Elmer B. Hallman of Spartanburg.  A resolution adopted at the association's 1926 organizational meeting noted that Mr. Hallman "by the exercise of his energy, tact, enthusiasm and zeal, brought about such interest, in South Carolina, in the game of chess as to make a State Chess Association a possibility. . . ."
